Pindos Mountains Mixed Forest Ecoregion

The village, the mountains and the valley are part of the Pindos Mountains Mixed Forest Ecoregion and border onto the Pindos National Park. This ecoregion of forests, woodland, mountain and valley stretches from here, through Albania and into the Balkans. Local wildlife in the Pindos includes Brown Bears, Wolves, and Jackals which are currently regarded as under threat and endangered by the WWF and stay very deep in the forests and away from human areas – so you’ll need some effort and a good guide to find them! It also includes a wide-variety of birds and is home to a number of IBAs (Important Bird Areas).

Mushrooms

The area is famous for its mushrooms and more than 1300 varieties can be found, including a number of extremely rare types. The area has rightly earned the name of the country of mushrooms.
